POB 694 - Hamilton, AL 35570

The Northwest Alabama Arts Council (NWAAC) is a voluntary organization formed to create an environment where the arts flourish. Our goal is to offer support for school art classes, area performing arts, and art camps, and the promotion and exploration of art and artists within our area. The primary activity of the Council will be the annual JBAF, which helps educate the public on local artists’ work and provide those artists a venue to showcase and sell their work. This festival will significantly enhance the region’s image as it grows. It is the only festival of its kind in the four county region we serve.

The NWAAC is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit.

BRILLIANT ELEMENTARY STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN 2009 MOLDING HEARTS, HANDS & MINDS PROGRAM

Molding Hearts, Hands, Minds

HAMILTON, ALABAMA – Fourth-grade Students from Brilliant Elementary School traveled to Jerry Brown Pottery in Hamilton on January 7, 8, and 9, and participated in the “Molding Hearts, Hands & Minds” program, sponsored by the Northwest Alabama Arts Council (NWAAC).  The students worked with Brown and his wife Sandra and members of the NWAAC, learning about the craftsmanship of pottery-making which has been a part of the Brown family since the 1700s.  Students made their own piece of pottery, working with Brown on his wheel.

The students’ pottery pieces will be displayed at the 2009 Jerry Brown Arts Festival in Hamilton on March 7 and 8, and the top five students will be awarded scholarships to the Bevill State Community College-Hamilton Campus Art Camp scheduled for June.

This is the third year of the program.  Students from Hamilton and Guin previously participated in the program.  The program provides students access to a hands-on arts education in working with Brown, recipient of the 1992 National Heritage Fellowship and the 2003 Alabama Heritage Award, and helps identify students who have an interest and talent in art.
